Abstract Koala Portrait

A koala faces forward against a dense green, orange and black field of spirals, circles and sweeping dot-style bands. The rounded ears and dark nose keep the animal immediately recognisable, while the patterned body and background blur the boundary between portrait and abstract design. The strong green-and-orange contrast makes this a lively feature for a living room, study, hallway or creative workspace. From a distance the koala's face is the anchor; closer in, the spirals, dotted limbs and layered colour create a much busier and more playful surface.

I wanted the portrait to feel integrated with its surrounding pattern rather than simply placed on top of it. The repeated circles and curved lines move through the body and background together, which gives the piece its energy. The Aboriginal-inspired dot-style treatment is part of my contemporary personal visual practice and is used here as a compositional choice for rhythm, colour and texture.
