Colourful Kookaburra Portrait

A boldly stylised kookaburra fills this vertical portrait, its long beak, pale chest and blue-black feathers set against a dense field of circular orange, cream and blue detail. The bird has real presence, but the patterned background keeps the whole composition lively rather than formal. It would make a strong feature in a living room, hallway, study or gift display for someone who enjoys Australian wildlife with plenty of colour. The bird reads clearly from across the room, while the smaller marks in the plumage and background reward a closer look.

I wanted the portrait to hold onto the bird's alert character while allowing the surrounding colour and pattern to become almost as important as the subject. The dot-style and circular details belong to my contemporary Aboriginal-inspired visual practice and are used here as personal compositional choices for rhythm and texture.
