Young Koala Portrait

A young koala clings to a tree trunk beneath a dense field of green, gold and orange circular detail, its pale ears and warm brown-grey face standing out against the darker foliage. The large eyes and close framing give the portrait an immediate gentle presence without losing the rich patterned surface around it. This vertical wildlife piece can work in a bedroom, living room, study or hallway where Australian animal art and earthy colour feel at home. The face reads clearly from across the room, while the dotted fur, leaves and curved background marks become much more rewarding at close range.

I wanted the koala to remain soft and recognisable while the surrounding pattern carried more of the visual energy. The tree trunk gives the pose a clear anchor, and the repeated marks link the animal with the foliage without assigning them a fixed meaning. The Aboriginal-inspired dot-style detail belongs to my contemporary personal practice and is used as a compositional choice for texture and rhythm.
