Cosmic Emu in Blue Starlight

A long-necked emu rises through deep blue, teal and black waves beneath a halo of star-like dots and circular light. The portrait moves from pale feather detail into sweeping darker colour, giving the bird an almost celestial presence without losing its recognisable character. This vertical piece suits a living room, hallway, bedroom or study where dark blue can create atmosphere without becoming heavy. From across the room the emu silhouette carries the image; closer up, the scattered dots and layered feather marks give the surface much more movement.

I wanted to bring together the familiar shape of an emu and the simple wonder of looking into a huge night sky. The celestial marks are imaginative compositional details, while the dot-style rhythm is part of my own contemporary Aboriginal-inspired practice.
