Old Man Pa Kangaroo Portrait in Black

Old Man Pa emerges from a deep black ground in this close monochrome kangaroo portrait, with silver-grey fur and bright ear edges shaping the face out of the darkness. The direct gaze and near-symmetrical composition give the image a strong, almost studio-like presence. This is a confident piece for a study, hallway, living room or bedroom where a darker artwork can create contrast without relying on lots of colour. It reads as a bold animal portrait from across the room, then reveals fine fur and tonal detail when viewed closer.

I wanted this version to depend almost entirely on light and shadow. Removing the landscape meant the ears, eyes and muzzle had to create the structure, so I let the black ground fall away and kept the highlights selective. The restraint makes the portrait feel more formal than the warmer country versions, but the close expression keeps it personal.
