Old Man Pa Kangaroo Study

Old Man Pa looks straight out from a soft beige ground in this close kangaroo study, where grey fur, dark ears and warm brown eyes carry nearly all of the visual weight. The simple background keeps the face clear and gives the portrait a clean, contemporary calm. Its neutral colour makes it easy to live with in a bedroom, study, hallway or pared-back living room. The large face reads strongly from a distance, while the smaller fur textures around the muzzle and ears make the piece more interesting when seen up close.

I stripped this version back until the portrait itself had nowhere to hide. With no landscape and almost no background texture, the expression, ears and shape of the muzzle had to carry the image. I kept the palette warm rather than stark, which gives the study a softer presence and lets it sit comfortably beside timber, cream, grey or black interiors.
